Can I Get Sedation For A Dental Cleaning? What You Need To Know

August 30, 2020

If you have serious dental anxiety, even the idea of a basic dental cleaning may make you feel nervous, scared, and anxious. And at Southington Dentistry, we understand that anxiety can make it hard to get the dental care you need. That’s why we offer sedation dentistry in Southington, Plantsville, and Wolcott.  But can you be sedated for a dental cleaning at our office? Find out in this blog post, and learn more about the benefits of sedation dentistry from Dr. Neil Salesky.

We Offer Nitrous Oxide Sedation For Dental Cleanings

Wondering if you can get sedation for a dental cleaning? The answer is “yes.” At our office, we offer sedation dentistry to all of our patients. If you want to be sedated during your dental cleaning, we recommend nitrous oxide sedation. Nitrous oxide, also known as “laughing gas” is ideal for minimally-invasive treatments like a dental cleaning. You’ll just put on a comfortable nose mask, breathe through your nose when instructed to do so by Dr. Salesky, and relax.  The gas will enter your bloodstream through your lungs and help eliminate feelings of pain, anxiety, and discomfort, while allowing you to remain completely alert and responsive to commands.  With nitrous oxide sedation, you’ll feel “floaty” and a bit disconnected from what’s happening around you, but you will be fully conscious. This treatment also can help with a strong gag reflex, which can be a problem during a dental cleaning.

Do You Really Need Sedation For A Dental Cleaning? Steps For Dealing With Anxiety

Sedation is a good option if you have serious anxiety. However, it does add some more complexity and cost to your appointment. If you have mild anxiety, you may not need to be sedated during your dental cleaning if you follow a few steps to help with your fear of the dentist.

  • Consult with Dr. Salesky before your appointment – You can have an open, honest conversation with Dr. Salesky about your fear and anxiety, triggers that make your fear worse, and the experiences you’ve had at dentists in the past. This ensures that Dr. Salesky can customize your care, and minimize your fear and anxiety.
  • Bring something to distract you during your treatment – Listening to a podcast, playing your favorite music, or watching something on your phone, for example, can distract you from the process of your dental cleaning and help with anxiety.
  • Try breathing exercises – Focusing on deep, controlled breathing is a great way to distract yourself from your treatment, and make sure you mitigate feelings of stress and anxiety.
