Dental Bridges

There’s no such thing as an unfixable smile!

Beautiful, pearly whites are today’s standard. Unfortunately, dental injuries, tooth decay and other oral issues can leave patients with some gaps. If left untreated, your remaining teeth can shift out of place. And missing teeth can make us feel self-conscious or embarrassed of our smiles. Thankfully, Dr. Neil Salesky at Southington Dentistry can help fix the gaps!

What’s a dental bridge?

A popular and long-term solution for missing teeth are dental bridges. They’re usually comprised of two or more crowns placed on teeth to literally bridge the gap with a false tooth, and they can last up to 15 years with proper oral hygiene. The anchoring teeth on either side of the gap are known as abutments while the false tooth is called a pontic. The bridge can be made of gold, alloy or a combination of materials. Porcelain or ceramic is also available for a beautiful, natural look. Dr. Salesky is well versed in this procedure and has a high success rate with all his patients.

Types of dental bridges

Traditional bridges are the most common dental bridges. As described above, crowns are placed on abutments with the pontic tooth – made of porcelain, ceramic or metal – sitting between.

Cantilever bridges are less common. Since they are applied when there are only teeth on one side of the gap, they aren’t recommended in many cases as it puts a lot of pressure on abutments.

Maryland bonded, resin-bonded, or simply a Maryland bridge, are made of porcelain, metal, or plastic teeth and gums with a metal or porcelain framework. Wings are bonded to existing teeth, often on just one side.

What’s the process?

Dr. Salesky will first take impressions to ensure that your crowns perfectly match your existing teeth. Impressions are sent to a lab where the crowns and false tooth are built to an exact match of size and color. The doctor will then prepare the abutment teeth to make room for the crowns. This involves recontouring the teeth. Temporary crowns and bridges are placed to protect your teeth and gums while you wait for the finished product. Your new dental bridge will then be placed and adjusted for the perfect fit.
